Our Classroom Activities

October 22-26, 2007

Dear Families,

We are continuing our month long unit about nighttime.  This week we will be learning about owls.  This week we will focus on the following concepts:

  • Owls have the world’s best night vision; they can hear better than other birds.
  • Owl eyes don’t move.  Owls have very flexible necks that allow their heads to turn most of the way around.
  • Ear tufts have nothing to do with the owl’s hearing.  Owls have ears that you don’t usually see.  Large ear holes are hidden by their facial disks.
  • Unlike most birds, the feathers of an owl’s wings have soft edges.  This helps an owl fly almost silently, so as not to be heard by its prey.

Who Are You?

Way up high in the old oak tree,

Point up.

One little owl looked at me.

Hold up one finger.

So I said, “Who-who?  Oh, who are you?”

Make circles with fingers.  Peer through them.

“Who-who,” he said, and away he flew!

Flap arms.
