| Dear Families and Friends,
Work towards transitioning the Worship Center to a mutli-purpose room is finally ready to begin. In addition to the money from a recent Walk-a-thon and the insurance settlement from last summer's water leak/flood, we also had some year-end donations to help complete this project. |
| Remodeling Begins |
| This week the new chairs and tables for the Worship Center arrived. This will allow for a variety of seating arrangements such as worship services, committee meetings, small groups, and dinners. In addition, paint colors for the Worship Center have been selected to compliment the chairs and new carpet. The Worship Center will have a fresh, new, clean look to it when this is all finished. There will be a couple of weeks where things will be a little bit out of place... but in the long run it's going to be great!
In the next 2-3 weeks we will be ready to have the new lights installed in the Worship Center, too.
In order to get ready for the "face lift" to the Worship Center, there are several projects that are going to need some additional help and expertise for some upcoming "Work Bees." Please refer to the following time frame:
Week of January 13: Chairs and tables arrive, order carpet; select paint.
Week of January 20: Prep work in Worship Center; begin cleaning up/cleaning out; debris box delivered.
Week of January 27: WORK BEE ON SUNDAY, JAN. 27, 12:30 pm - remove lights from Worship Center; remove lockers from hallway; walls stripped; sheet rock/dry wall work begun. New
lights go up.
Week of February 3: WORK BEE ON SUNDAY, FEB. 3, 12:30 pm - Finish sheet rock/drywall; prep for painting; relocate cabinets/curtains. Worship Center painted.
Week of February 10: Flooring laid; cleaning up; flat screens hung;
Week of February 17: Ready for Open House
You'll notice we have two "Work Bees" planned for this winter. We need all the help we can get to strip and prep the walls to get them ready to paint. Anyone with experience hanging sheet rock/dry wall is greatly needed! We need people who can carefully remove the old lights. We need people who have expertise in painting to help us finish this job, too. We need people who can fill holes with putty and sand them down. We need people who can help move wires and cables. We need you at our work bees at 12:30 pm on Sunday, January 27, and again on Sunday, February 3.
Come and join us for the work bees. Pizza will be served!

Excuse-Making |

|
You know it happens. In fact, we've all done it more times than we care to admit. Rather than own up to a mistake, we make excuses.
"What I did wasn't as bad as what he did."
"I can't help being the way God made me."
"I know it hurt her feelings, but I only told the truth."
There is nothing new or creative about this approach. It is as old as Eden and deeply ingrained in the processes of human thought and speech.
"The woman you gave me caused me to eat it."
"Kings get bored just sitting on their balconies."
"Crucify him! Who knows the truth about him anyway?"
The trick of refusing to accept responsibility has been institutionalized in our culture. Several years ago, the famous psychiatrist Karl Menninger called attention to the virtual disappearance of the word "sin" from contemporary vocabulary. With a sort of verbal sleight of hand, we tend to use a soft word such as "mistake" where we would better use the more severe term "sin;" we seem to prefer "sickness" to "evil." The softer words don't sound nearly so serious.
The greatest sin of all is blindness to one's own sinfulness. Until sin is admitted, forgiveness is irrelevant. Only when I accept responsibility for my actions can anything constructive be done toward putting things right. The language of honest confession is a far cry from making excuses.
"God, be merciful to me. I am a sinner."
"Jesus came to save sinners — of whom I am the worst."
"If we confess our sins, he will forgive and cleanse us."
It is a rare person who is brave enough to admit that he made the error on an office report, that she was the one guilty of spreading an unflattering tale, or that the marriage is failing because he has been abusive.
Rare as such persons may be, they are the ones who deserve the highest respect. They are the ones who correct faults, salvage relationships, and conquer defects of character. In their remorse, they find God. In finding God, they find not only pardon but empowerment to live an entirely new way.
If you're hiding behind a smokescreen of excuses, it is time to step into the light of honesty. You'll see things clearly — for the first time in a long time.
