Dear Families and Friends,

Our next Flagball Tournament takes place on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Monterrey Bay Academy.

As We See It…
Flag Ball Tournament

It was September 30 and the Flagball Tournament was held in Modesto at Central Valley Christian Academy. Before our first game, we practiced throwing, catching, hiking, and running routes. Our first game started at 10:15 AM. We were versing a school called Hollister. First we had prayer and then started the game. It was a close game, but luckily, we won. After that, we ate lunch and our next game started at 1:15 PM. The second school we versed was called Dinuba. Again, we had prayer and began the game. The game was very easy, but also fun. Our next game started right after, so we were all tired, but we still played. Our last game was tiring, but we still had so much fun. In the end, we were relieved that the game was done, but we were also glad that we won all three games. Overall, we had a great time and after all, the games were meant to have fun. The whole time I was there, I had a fun and positive time.

At our Flagball Tournament in CVCA, we played three schools, Hollister, Dinuba, and West Valley. All games were fun and tiring. The first school we played was Hollister. We were all nervous. I thought that our team lost but my teammates said that we won by one touchdown. Our second game we played Dinuba, They had many short passes, it was kinda confusing, but we were able to pull their flags anyways. Eventually we won again, by a little to a lot. Third game, which we played West Valley was very tiring. It was after our second game. In our first down we already made a touchdown. Again we won. But we congratulated the others for doing good plays.

It felt really good when we won from game to game. I was wrong in the beginning, I thought we were going to loose. But I guess we proved ourselves. It was very fun playing other schools and also making new friends. I never felt so achy in my life. But it was worth it.

The Flagball Tournament at CVCA was not only tiring, but lots of fun! Our games were against Hollister, Dinuba, and West Valley. In our first game we were close to having a tie, but we ended up winning. The other team wasn’t mad at us, but instead were nice and I became friends with some of them. In our second game against Dinuba we also won with so many touch downs that I lost count. They were really good defenders , and there was a younger, shorter girl who made most of the touchdowns in her team as well as out-run almost everyone. And, in our final game against West Valley we won by a few more points, but at the beginning I was almost 100% sure they would win.

I have to admit it felt nice to win all our games, but it felt a lot nicer that I made new friends. I really look forward to seeing them in other tournaments this year, and I can’t wait ‘till the next Flagball Tournament!

Mark Your Calendars for Walk-a-thon

Our 15th annual Walk-a-thon will take place at Lake Merced on Sunday, October 21, 2007, at 9:00 a.m. Students, staff, and friends in our community will be joining us that morning to help raise funds for our school.

This year’s project is the Worship Center. We want to finish transitioning our worship center into a multipurpose room. Funds will be used to purchase new lights for the Worship Center, create meeting/small group areas, and enhance our sound system in the Worship Center.

A strong support of our Walk-a-thon is essential for maintaining San Francisco Adventist School's tradition of excellence. Our goal this year is $10,000.

I'm confident that as we all work together we can reach our goal and continue to make our school a great place for kids to grow.

Sincerely,

Work as Witness

The Fax of Life

Christian life is to be understood in terms of two arenas – sacred and secular. Sacred places are church buildings. Sacred events are those such as worship or baptism or weddings. Sacred people are preachers or church officers.

The remainder of life was declared secular. So farms, stores, and schools were secular places. Surgery and manufacturing, accounting and teaching, driving and watching TV – all were labeled secular. And ordinary people doing the routine and humdrum things of shopping, eating, and reading are secular.

But that is so terribly wrong. In God’s plan for human existence, it makes no sense. In light of Christ’s teaching, work is witness.

I can grant that there is a sense of the sacred and holy in a church assembled for worship that is missing from a crowded, busy office. But work is sacred too. It is holy by virtue of divine presence you bring to it as a person filled with God's Spirit and participating in God's creative work.

Writing letters, hiring people, selling lumber, stocking shelves, firing someone who broke company policy again, answering phones – these and whatever other things you will be expected
to do today are not secular. They're not, that is, unless you misunderstand your role in them. You and I are in the world to continue the work of God. Creating. Improving. Empowering. Doing things that we and others will look at and say are "good" or even "very good."

My appeal is not that we should become workaholics. Instead, it is that we see ourselves as God sees us. We are extensions of his presence into the nooks and crannies of the world. If Paul could tell slaves to do their chores "with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to human masters" (Ephesians 6:5-8), surely some of us could take a more elevated view of our tasks in the workplace.

Work isn't an unspiritual curse from which you should desire freedom in order to visit retreats, seminars, and workshops on spiritual life. It is your lab for turning lead to gold, humdrum to holy by the Spirit-presence you take to life.

Your spiritual life won’t be on hold as you work today. It will be on display.
